Bastidores de Star Wars têm chip 64 bits e XP
Os estúdios de George Lucas conseguiram reduzir até 50% o tempo de renderização de efeitos especiais – apresentação final do vídeo – no terceiro episódio da saga Star Wars – A Vingança dos Sith. Nos bastidores, está a tecnologia de processamento a 64 bits. Dispondo de maior poder de processamento na fase de produção, o novo filme ganhou 30 minutos de efeitos especiais a mais que o antecessor, O Ataque dos Clones.
De acordo com o director de animação Rob Coleman, o primeiro episódio possuía 60 minutos de animação, enquanto o segundo apresentava cerca de dez minutos a mais. “Este tem 90 minutos – o equivalente à duração de um filme inteiro da Pixar. Fizemos mais de 1.250 cenas com efeitos especiais”, revelou.
Produção
Segundo Daniela Girão, gerente de marketing da AMD, o processamento de 64 bits permitiu que o processo de produção do filme fosse modificado. Inicialmente, a história inteira era desenhada de acordo com os gostos do director. Para a fase seguinte, o filme foi todo recriado num ambiente totalmente digital, a partir do qual George Lucas pôde dirigir a obra sem a necessidade dos actores.
Para a executiva da AMD, a direcção num ambiente digital só foi possível graças à arquitectura de 64 bits. “Na criação do segundo episódio, quando foram utilizados processadores Athlon MP, George Lucas encontrava-se com os artistas digitais apenas uma vez por semana. Desta vez, os encontros eram diários”, afirmou. Segundo ela, o novo processo economizou cerca de dez milhões de dólares em relação à produção do segundo episódio.
Só depois de definidos os movimentos em ambiente digital é que as cenas eram filmadas, eliminando as possibilidades de gravar cenas indesejadas.
Equipamentos
Desenvolvida em estúdio pela JAK Films, braço da LucasFilms, toda a pré-produção de Star Wars foi criada em 30 estações de trabalho equipadas com processadores Dual AMD Opteron de 2,2 GHz, 4 Gigabytes de memória DDR, placas de vídeo NVIDIA Quadro FX 3000 com 256 Megabytes de memória DDR, dois discos rígidos de 120 e 250 GB, gravador de DVD e sistema operativo Microsoft Windows XP.
Como se não fosse suficiente, as estações ainda eram interligadas por um servidor equipado com chip Dual AMD Opteron de 2,2 GHz, 8 GB de memória DDR, dois discos de 36 GB SCSI e sistema operativo Microsoft Cluster Server 2003.
Projetos
Para o futuro, a AMD afirma que pretende continuar os projectos com a Lucasfilm, JAK Films, Industrial Light + Magic (braço da Lucasfilm especializada em efeitos especiais), LucasArts (fabricante de jogos) e operações futuras da companhia no sector televisivo.
